HANEW, K., SASAKI, A. and YOSHINAGA, K. Evidence for Endogenous Dopaminergic Control of OH Release in Man. Tohoku J. exp. Med., 1981, 135 (1), 103-108 In order to determine whether or not there is a tonic dopamine (DA) control of GH release, the effect of an anti-dopaminergic agent, sulpiride, on GH secretion was studied in 12 normal subjects. After the administration of sulpiride, serum concentrations of sulpiride reached a peak value (1.93+0.1 μg/ml, mean+s.E.M., n=6) at 15 min and then showed a gradual decrease. Concomitantly, mean plasma prolactin (PRL) showed a rapid elevation, with a peak value of 161.9+11.5 ng/ml at 30 min, followed by a gradual decrease. Even at 180 min after sulpiride injection, the plasma PRL was still 9 times higher than the initial level (p<0.005). Within 90 min after the injection, 12 subjects showed a minimal but significant decrease in GH (from 0.78+0.17 to 0.32+0.03 ng/ml, p<0.02). After another 90 min, the plasma GH level increased and the mean peak value (8.1+2.7 ng/ml) at 180 min was significantly higher than the initial value (p<0.02). From these observations, it was suggested that sulpiride inhibited the endogenous DA activity over 180 min, and that the GH decrease within 90 min was due to a suppression of endogenous DA activity. Factors other than DA, however, might be considered for the GH increase after 90 min. dopamine; GH; prolactin; sulpiride

Effects of growth hormone on neuroendocrine function.
Although the role of growth hormone (GH) in the control of reproductive functions is not well understood, there is considerable evidence that the states of both GH deficiency and GH excess are typically associated with reproductive deficits. To identify the possible involvement of functional alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary system in producing these deficits, we are studying neuroendoc...
متن کاملThe role of endogenous GHRH in arginine-, insulin-, clonidine- and l-dopa-induced GH release in normal subjects.
OBJECTIVE The role of endogenous GHRH in arginine-, insulin-, clonidine- and l-dopa-induced GH secretion was studied in man using a GHRH antagonist (GHRH-Ant). DESIGN Ten healthy adult males were studied for serum GH responses to arginine or insulin singly, or sequentially 120 min after GHRH injection with or without combined administration of GHRH-Ant. Further, GHRH, clonidine or l-dopa were...
متن کاملActions and release characteristics of secretin in the rat cerebellum
Secretin, a peptide hormone of the gastrointestinal system, has been implicated in the etiology of autism. Our laboratory previously demonstrated the expression of secretin and its receptors in specific central neurons, and found for the first time that secretin is neuroactive in the cerebellum. We showed that bath application of secretin facilitated the release of GABA from terminals of basket...

متن کاملRegulation of episodic growth hormone secretion by the central epinephrine system. Studies in the chronically cannulated rat.
Catecholamines are postulated to regulate growth hormone (GH) secretion by their influence on the release of two hypothalamic substances, somatostatin, which inhibits GH release, and GH-releasing factor, as yet unidentified. Extensive pharmacologic studies in man and animals indicate a stimulatory effect of central norepinephrine and dopamine on GH, but the function of epiphephrine (EPI) is unc...
